WALL SUNDIALS

MADE FOR ANY ASPECT WALL

Each wall sundial will be made for your latitude and the exact aspect of your wall. A wall facing anywhere between south east and south west is the best choice. An east facing dial will show the morning hours, and a west facing dial the afternoon hours. A north facing dial will only show early morning and late evening hours during summer.

Direct south wall sundials are symmetrical and show the time from 6 a.m. and 6.p.m. Sundials for other directions are asymmetric.

MEASURING YOUR WALL DIRECTION

To calibrate your wall dial during manufacture Sundialman needs the bearing of the wall. Full instructions will be sent at the time of your order, or Nick will arrange to visit the site to take a reading if you prefer. WHICH WALL SUNDIAL ?

When choosing the size of a wall dial consider how far away a person reading the dial will be. Unlike a horizontal sundial on a plinth, where it is possible to walk nearer to read the time from the shadow, it may not be possible to get near to a wall dial. If the dial is high up or people will be at some distance from the wall, then a larger dial may be required in order that the numbers are clearly visible.

The choice of shape can be important. The proportions need to be appropriate for the wall and any openings or features on the wall such as doors and windows. Practically any shape is possible. The simplicity of square or rectangular dials make these the most popular. The Scroll Top design adds character if appropriately used.

ENGRAVING

The Hours can be shown with either Roman or Arabic numbers and any wording is included on the larger rectangular sizes. There is a small selection of traditional mottos on the mottos page. A separate Equation of time plate can be provided to mount near to the sundial.
